Medical Marijuana Card Q & A

What is a medical marijuana card?

A medical marijuana card is a form of identification used to access and legally purchase cannabis-derived items at medical marijuana dispensaries. The cards are issued by the state of Georgia, but a medical doctor must first diagnose you with an approved condition.

What conditions qualify for a medical marijuana card?

In the state of Georgia, you can receive a medical marijuana card for a variety of conditions, including:

  • End stage cancer
  • Seizure disorders like epilepsy
  • ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis (severe or end stage)
  • Sickle cell disease (severe or end stage)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Mitochondrial disease
  • AIDS
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Tourrette’s syndrome
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

You might also qualify for a medical marijuana card if you experience chronic pain or are in hospice care.

How do I obtain a medical marijuana card in the state of Georgia?

To get a medical marijuana card in the state of Georgia, you have to apply for a Low THC Registry Card. To do that, you must undergo a comprehensive physical exam from a qualified medical professional like those at iClinic Atlanta.

If your doctor determines that you qualify, they fill out two separate forms –– a waiver form and a certification form –– and submit them to the state. Once the state processes your application, a representative from the Department of Public Health’s Vital Records contacts you.

You pick your medical marijuana card up at a Public Health Office and then use it at local dispensaries.

How much does a medical marijuana card cost?

A medical marijuana card costs $25. Before receiving your card, you’ll need to submit the payment to the Public Health Office, where you pick it up.

Each card is valid for two years from the date you receive it. When it expires, you’ll need to reapply.

Where can I purchase low THC cannabis oil?

To purchase low THC cannabis oil, you’ll need to visit a dispensary approved by the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission. These facilities are licensed by the state of Georgia and are approved to release low THC oil to qualifying individuals with medical marijuana cards.
